Keauhou Bay
Hangloose, Maui 2006.
Dive: 17 Date: 6/16/2000
Location: Manta night dive off of Kona Surf Hotel; Kailua-Kona, Hawaii from Sea Paradise
Depth: 35ft Time: 0:52
Comments: Night dive, the original manta ray night dive. At that point in my life, was the number one dive of my life! 6 ft manta ray, whitetip reef shark, several giant morays, and small octopus.
Sea Paradise Sea Paradise runs a small boat that leaves out of Keauhou Bay, just minutes south of Kailua-Kona, off of Ali'i Drive. They stay primarily around Keauhou and Kailua-Kona. Keauhou Bay is also where the original Manta Ray night dive takes place (right off the Outrigger (prior Kona Surf Hotel), so they are minutes from the site. (800) 322-KONA or (808) 322-2500.
If there is one dive that you must do when in Kailua-Kona, it is the Manta Ray night dive, but the Garden Eel Cove is the better one now. The floodlights from the Outrigger (old Kona Surf Hotel) attract small shrimp and other plankton. The manta rays, over the last few decades, have learned this and come by to feed in this area, usually just after dusk. I've been told in the old days that divers used to see many large manta rays feeding at the same time. Recently, they have not been coming around or have moved. In fact when I was there (6/2000), a divemaster said they went through the whole month of May of 2000 and only saw 1 ray. The boats chum the water and put lights on the bottom to try to attract more plankton. I don't know how effective this is, but what I do know is that if you dive on a cloudy day and night, you will increase your chances of seeing mantas. The dive operators overweight you, and position you at the bottom. The night I went down (June 16, 2000), was a cloudy night with the full moon not being visible, and the whole day had been overcast. I was lucky and a 6 foot wide manta showed up, stayed with us for 30 minutes, made 30-50 passes filter-feeding with his mouth open, and came within an arm's length of me on most of the passes, brushing my hair on some, and bumping my head on one pass (don't wear your snorkel). It is my most incredible diving experience and I hope to repeat it someday.

Molokini is a partially sunken crater off the southwest corner of Maui Island. The island is protected by law due to seasonal nesting birds, has a deep (200-300 ft) backwall on the south side, and is shallower on the inside, with most of the coral close to the inside rim, and large reefs to the east and west, with a sand channel in between. The sand channels occasionally attract big pelagic animals and also have a patch of Hawaiian garden eels around > 80 ft. During the whale season, you can hear the eerie whale song underwater.
