Stephan and Suhad's European Backpacking Trip September 98

Day Eight, Florence

The door to our pensione

We started the day off by heading to the museums that made Florence famous. We first headed to the Galleria della Accademie which houses Michelangelo's sculpture, David. Much more greater than lifesize, the marble sculpture towers above the visitors at a confluence of two hallways that is illuminated via a skylight. It is an incredibly beautiful work with great detail.

Other works of art include unfinished sculptures by Michelangelo, many other sculptures, and various religious art.

We then walked to the other must-see museum in Florence, the Uffizi. There, we waited awhile before being able to enter the museum as there were always long lines to get inside. We finally got in and saw some of the works that the museum is most famous for--Botticelli's most well-known masterpieces, including Primavera.

The Uffizi has an excellent collection of art, well worth seeing. The museum was damaged in a Mafia car bomb assassination in 1994, and the damaged wing was just about to open when we were there.

Posing with the cycles

We stayed at the Uffizi until it got dark, as the museum depends alot upon sunlight for illumination. Then we walked around the streets of Firenze, just as a sudden storm dropped buckets of rain. We headed back to our pension and packed, to prepare for our next journey in the morning.
